    Victor, awesome theme! If you have an english version of the tutorial, could you please send it to me via email? Also I noticed there is no blog section in this theme. I currently use the Thesis theme and have created 4 static pages within WordPress. Can I just drop this theme into the Thesis theme and use it just on the Portfolio section?

    Great work and thanks for your reply.

    Felicidades! Realmente estupendo! No consigo aclararme sin embargo para generar las páginas: contact y about, a pesar demodificar los id, tal y como aparecen en el phpmyadmin, y el archivo cform.php. Tampoco me muestra la pantalla de error 404(miraré el post al respecto). ¿Alguna idea? Gracias por tu aporte. El diseño excelente.

    Hi there Victor, this is a great theme!
    It was fairly easy to install and use despite being a complete newbie to wordpress & themes in general. However, at the moment I’m stuck with a problem which must be something really simple and that makes me feel stupid when someone tells the solution:

    1) How do you create the ‘About’ and ‘Contact’ pages through WordPress admin panel? Is there somewhere a page template for them?

    2) Also my project pages do not show the title “About the project” – where should I fix this?

    Thanks in advance!

    05-02-2009 at %I:%M %p

    Hi Rikka, you should edit index.php. If you use a translator could help you to read the tutorial.

    Index.php
    # if (is_category(work) or is_category(featured)):
    # // Category Work
    # // http://codex.wordpress.org/Conditional_Tags#A_Category_Page
    # include(TEMPLATEPATH . '/category-work.php');
    # elseif( in_category(3) ) :
    # // Post in Category Work(in our case ID 3) - View Case Study
    # // http://codex.wordpress.org/Conditional_Tags#A_Category_Page
    # // http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/in_category#Use_OUTSIDE_The_Loop
    # include(TEMPLATEPATH . '/work.php');
    # endif
    #
    # if(is_page(about)) :
    # // Page About | http://codex.wordpress.org/Conditional_Tags#A_PAGE_Page
    # include(TEMPLATEPATH . '/about.php');
    # elseif(is_page(contact-us)) :
    # // Page Contact

    Hey Victor,

    Thanks a lot for sharing the theme! I appreciate it a lot.

    However, like Ali Bendall, I am having a problem with the javascript sliding effect — all my site shows is a vertical scroll bar to scroll through my portfolio.
    The current state of my site is here: http://seanahrens.net/
    I have tried to read the tutorial over and over to understand what I am doing wrong, but the Google-translated version of the tutorial is pretty difficult to understand :). Can you tell me specifically what I would need to do?

    Hello,

    This is a GREAT theme! Simple, effective and well commented. I decided to use it for my portfolio and I’ve learned a lot while editing it… thanks!
    I have a question for you. The thumbs pile up under the slider and as I understood there is a limitation of 10 posts. Can I change it to 12 so that it looks better, or maybe change it to unlimited so that all my work is piled up?
    Also the number of works in the slider is limited to 10. How can I control it?

    Thanks again!

    P.S. For those of you needing the tutorial in English… for me google translate worked just fine. Just be carefull because it changes the code attachments also so get those from the original Spanish version.

    Hola Victor,
    Me vas a perdonar pero no entiendo nada en el tutorial.
    No se explica que hay que hacer con las páginas about y contact y mucho menos crear páginas nuevas..por lo visto hay que hacer algo con los ID´s de la Base de daots, pero esos pasos no los mencionas en ningún lado, disculpame pero no creo que sea muy buena esta plantilla puesto que hay que retocar demasiado el código y lo que en otras plantillas está automatizado en esta no..
    Perdoname pero te agradecería que explicaras mejor los pasos…

    Un saludo y gracias

    Si estás interesada en aprender, creo que te puede servir de ayuda.
    Juzgar la plantilla como buena o mala, sin tener conocimientos de lo que se habla, me parece que es aventurarse.

    Hi Victor,

    First of all, this is a great theme for a portfolio.
    I appreciate you’re offering this theme for free… with instructions at least… a version of it. Not the complete and functional version I see on the Demo. ;-)

    Second, I’m a graphic designer who does not have the skills/knowledge or the time (right now) to understand how to put this thing running smooth like in the demo.
    I don’t think the instructions on this site are for everyone, at least not for me. I spent almost an entire day trying to make it 100% functional and I ended up frustrated. But like me, and judging from the comments here, there are many others.

    Third, my proposition / suggestion to you:

    Make a 100% functional-all-bells-and-whistles version of this theme and… sell it! :-)
    (The ready theme would come with comments, lightbox js, etc, and a simple tutorial especially made for all the ignorant people out there… like me :-) )

    You can leave this “learning” version as a free version to people who can make something cool out of it, but for the rest of us, I believe that we would buy it from you. At least I would seriously think about it (I would have to see the final version first, off course). Because I’m looking for a good theme to make my online portfolio. And I believe there are many others interested in buying it for the same exact reason. If the price is good, say 20/30€ (like the themes in Themeforest ( have a look: http://wpesp.com/go/themeforest/ ).

    Well, this is my suggestion to you, think about it, please. The best of two worlds: the people who wants to learn can still do it with the free version, and the people that just want to use it will give you a reward (€) for you effort and hard work on this great theme!

    cheers!
    pedro

    Hi Pedro,
    Thanks for your post. You are right, lot of people want to use the Theme without skills but now, I don’t have time to create a new version, sorry. Probably, I will do one in a couple of months.

  52. weremoose said: 52

    That doesn’t sound so nice… crappy “learning version” to share and commented version with plugins and support to sell… There is a whole philosophy behind sharing.
    I personally appreciate it, say “thanks for sharing” and understand that probably there is some reason that the theme is distributed like this (I assume free time, as you also said, is not a luxury for everyone). It would be a bit stupid (from the sharing point of view) if there was a better version of the theme but not for sharing…

  53. Víctor said: 53

    06-03-2009 at %I:%M %p

    Thanks for your suggestion. When I have some time, I will do a new version but now I’m full of work. I don’t really know if it will be free or not, like you said.

  54. pedro taquelim said: 54

    07-03-2009 at %I:%M %p

    Hi Victor,
    I hope you have the time to make a new version in a couple of months. And do whatever you think it’s fair: give it away for free, sell it for a small symbolic price, donation-ware…

    I have another suggestion ;-) :
    - I would like to see a Blog and Portfolio (both with comments) but in separate pages.

    Thanks, and good work to you!

    Hi Weremoose,
    Yes, I understand and appreciate sharing philosophy to, but sometimes, in some cases, a simple “thanks for sharing” is not enough (from the perspective of the developer, designer, artist, etc), because in some projects there is time and great effort involved in the process of making the final quality product, and in some cases others who are going to benefit from that effort/product, they don’t get involved directly in that same process of producing it. Like I think it is what happens in this case.

    In the sharing point of view, there are many ways of sharing. One can make the product completely free, donation-ware, give it away with restrictions of creation rights or other, etc, or sell it for a small price/contribution as well, lots of choices in the sharing philosophy. And I don’t see the stupidity in that.

    So I think it’s only fair that, if one wants, one should ask for a contribution/reward for the time and effort involved. Also, In this same logic, me, as a contributor, buyer, donator, I would have the moral right to make demanding requests for a final top quality product and more “bells and whistles”, simple tutorials, etc. But in this case I’m not contributing with anything, I will only benefit from it, so in that sense it’s strange that I’m asking/demanding for that kind of things.

    I don’t know if I explained myself well…. but anyway, this is my point of view.

    I visited your site. I liked your projects (the suitcase). Very Nice. Congrats to you! And it’s great that you managed to put this theme to work. Oh, by the way, I noticed that some images are missing. Fix it! ;)
    Good work to you!

    p.s.
    Sorry for my english, I’m portuguese.
    Also, I think I have this tendency towards trying to explain my point of view with to many words… ;-)

  55. weremoose said: 55

    07-03-2009 at %I:%M %p

    I understand what you mean pedro…

    I also have that tendency of explaining things with many words,
    what i wanted to say in short before is that if you create something complete and nice you will chose one way to go or else it sounds more to me like fooling people… I could be wrong though and I would most definitely pay for something if I like it.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts, that is part of the sharing philosophy if I am not mistaken ;-)

    Good luck with your site

    Hi there Victor,

    Super theme.

    Is the theme capable of inserting videos into where your panel image normally go?

    I’m a mixed media artist. I love this theme, but I’m concerned it’s strictly an image-based platform.

    I cannot get my hcard to work. It is showing up as a panel inside of my “Edit Page” window…

    In the title bar of the panel it says “hCard post settings”

    In the edit area of the panel it says “No Options For This Page”

    I have the plugin enabled, etc… But I cannot figure out how to allow options for editing such as “Photo,” “Family Name,” “Given Name,” Etc… (such as those shown in the tutorial.

    Can someone please help? I have tried everything…

    Thanks.

    I am installing this theme for my portfolio and love it! there is one thing I am trying to do and can’t figure it out.
    I want to limit the number of posts on the home page (got that part) and then when you click on the work page you would see the rest of my portfolio. For example, I have the top 6 or 9 pieces of my portfolio and then when you click on the work page you can see the remainder of my work. It keeps the home page looking clean. Is it a matter of tagging entries differently? How can I set this up and direct that header link to a different page than the home page?

    thanks to anyone with advice

    One thing I did adjust were the buttons, I made them slightly bigger, and more stylish (IMHumbleO). I also re-tweaked them again to include a light green on the right and a light red on the left to discourge anyone pressing the left button by mistake at start.
    I have included both versions of the buttons, and instructions how to implement them. Requires adusting of two files – very easy.

    Just copy and paste this link to get the .zip file containing the pics and look at the readme.txt for instructions – http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?tniljuhm5yz

    Wow, this theme has inspired me to completely overhaul my own site. Thank you!

    I’m having a weird problem, though. When I edit index.php by putting the correct category id in the in_category conditional statement, work.php also gets included in my about and contact pages so that the_content appears twice. When I change the category id, those pages display correctly (but then my work pages don’t). I have double checked everything and even tried a fresh WP install, but this keeps happening. Something is wrong with those conditional comments, but what???

    P.S. @Aliya, there is a field below the Portfolio Post Settings called Excerpt. Whatever you type in there will be the different text that you want to have on your home page.

    For anyone who can not get the hcard custom field options to show up you must edit the portfolio_custom-write-panel.php file.

    Go to line 165 where you will find the following:-
    if ($post->ID == 2 or $post->ID == 33) { // If is About (in our case id=5) or Contact (in our case id=89) page

    You need to change the post ID numbers to the ones of your ‘about’ and ‘contact’ pages. Also when you make your about and contact page make sure the template is set to default or it will freak out.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi there, would like to first compliment your classy theme :)
    Here is my problem: I went through the various steps on your website and got everything working perfectly. I then changed the “Blog address (URL)” in the settings and now all the pages and posts are no longer working. The homepage is fine but I receive an “internal server error” message if I click on anything. If I change the “Blog address (URL)” back to example.com/ftpfile everything goes back to normal but I would like the blog to have a different name than the directory.

    Hello here is Lou of comment 124 – After 2 days of scratching my head I finally found the problem and solved it. After changing the “Blog address (URL)” the the general settings I went to:

    Settings – Permalinks
    Then I chose my common setting of preference (in my case Day and Name)
    Clicked save changes

    Now here’s the important message I missed located right under the ‘save changes” tab:
    “If your .htaccess file were writable, we could do this automatically, but it isn’t so these are the mod_rewrite rules you should have in your .htaccess file. Click in the field and press CTRL + a to select all.”

    And that’s exactly what I did. ctrl copied the code, went to my ftp (I use filezilla), downloaded the htaccess file and used notepad to replace the code.
    Then I re-uploaded the htaccess file back to my ftp and voila!

    Easy if you know how to do it

    I was having some issues initially, not realizing that category 3 was required to display individual posts.

    Having category 3 allocated elsewhere, I opted instead to modify index.php to look for a parent category name – in this case ‘portfolio’ as that is the parent category to ‘work’ the WPESP sample employs.

    $category = get_the_category(); // add this to get the category name
    $parent = get_cat_name($category[0]->category_parent); // add this to get the parent category name
    if (is_category(work) or is_category(featured)):
    // Category Work | http://codex.wordpress.org/Conditional_Tags#A_Category_Page
    include(TEMPLATEPATH . '/category-work.php');
    // replace elseif( in_category(3)) ...
    elseif( $parent == 'portfolio') :
    // Post in Category Work (in our case ID 3) *View Case Study* | http://codex.wordpress.org/Conditional_Tag$
    include(TEMPLATEPATH . '/work.php');
    endif

    What this means is:
    1. make the category ‘work’ a subcategory of ‘portfolio’
    2. modify index.php as described above
    2. use system as designed

    I’ve just installed the theme, but I can’t seem to figure out how to use it. How do I post? or anything. Sorry if I sound dumb.

    Guys.

    I am English so I write fluent English so the two things that most people get wound up about with this theme I will write for you here in clear English. The English of the instructions is not clear and concise and can be very confusing.

    First off – categories.

    You must have two categories, Featured and Work. Work must be the parent category of Featured.

    Get the id of the Work category, go to your index.php file, find the line:

    elseif( in_category(10) ) :

    It’s near the top. Replace the “10! with the id of your category. E.g. the id of mine was 10.

    Next, create two pages, one called About, one called Contact. Do not use the templates! You do not need to use them, they will break the pages. Just leave the pages completely blank, don’t change or add anything and then publish them.

    Get the ids for the two pages.

    Go to portfolio_custom-write-panel.php and find this line:

    if ($post->ID == 2 or $post->ID == 182) { // If is About (in our case id=5) or Contact (in our case id=89) page

    It is line number 165.

    Edit the post ids and change them to match the post ids of your Contact and About pages.

    You can now go into these pages and edit the hcard!

    To get your contact form to work, go into the Contact page, and look on your TinyMCE editor (if you do not have this plugin, search it and install it) and there is a button on the far left. Click it and you can insert your form….then save the page.

    Go to portfolio_panel.php

    Find this line

    And this line

    <a class="<?php if (in_category(11)): // Featured Category (in our case id=5)

    They are near the button. Get the id of your featured category and change it to match.
